چکیده

QIN, JIFENG. A Low Noise, High Efficiency Envelope Modulator Structure for EDGE Polar Modulation. (Under the direction of Dr. Alex Q. Huang). Dynamic supply of power amplifiers in wireless transmitters can overcome the linearity-efficiency tradeoff issue in power amplifiers design, and envelope modulator is the key block in the dynamic supply system, low noise and high efficiency implementations are of many people's interests. Power management issues in envelope modulators for polar modulation are becoming increasingly complex and challenging. Both voltage step up and step down functions are required based on the input and output voltage ranges, the envelope modulator should have enough bandwidth to pass the modulated fast changing signal without distortion, and the output spectrum of the envelope modulator should meet stringent wireless standard specifications. High efficiency, high bandwidth and low noise requirements make envelope modulator design very challenging, and traditional switch mode power supplies like buckboost converters cannot provide good spectrum results because of their high noise boost region. Comparing with switching mode power supplies, charge pumps have several advantages in terms of low noise and high efficiency, in this thesis, a novel two stage envelope modulator structure is proposed by using a voltage doubler followed with a 10MHz buck converter, this modulator achieves high efficiency, and the switching noise is reduced by 50dB compared to 4 switch buck boost converter (4SBBC) solution, and the spectrum simulation results meet the EDGE wireless standard. Binary Power Amplifier with 2 - Bit Sigma - Delta Modulation Method for EER Transmitter

Jiyoun Lim et al. 377 A novel power amplifier for a polar transmitter is proposed to achieve better spectral performance for a wideband envelope signal. In the proposed scheme, 2-bit sigma-delta (ΣΔ) modulation of the envelope signal is introduced, and the power amplifier configuration is modified in a binary form to accommodate the 2-bit digitized envelope signals. The 2-bit ΣΔ modulator lower...

A Low-Noise Delta-Sigma Phase Modulator for Polar Transmitters

A low-noise phase modulator, using finite-impulse-response (FIR) filtering embedded delta-sigma (ΔΣ) fractional-N phase-locked loop (PLL), is fabricated in 0.18 μ m CMOS for GSM/EDGE polar transmitters. A simplified digital compensation filter with inverse-FIR and -PLL features is proposed to trade off the transmitter noise and linearity. Experimental results show that the presented architectur...

A CMOS Hybrid Switching Amplitude Modulator for Class-E2 EDGE Polar Transmitters

Abstract A hybrid switching amplitude modulator for class-E2 EDGE polar transmitters is proposed. To achieve both high-efficiency and high-speed, it consists of a wideband buffered linear amplifier as a voltage source and a hysteresis-controlled switching amplifier as a dependent current source. The novel linear amplifier has a high current driving capability of approximately 160mA with a bandw...

Fully Integrated CMOS Switching Power Mixer Array for Linearization and Back-Off Efficiency Improvement

Non-constant envelope modulation schemes have become commonplace in cellular applications due to their higher spectral efficiency. Linear PAs driven by an RF transmitter are usually used to generate these signals faithfully at the expense of power efficiency. Separate processing of amplitude and phase information (e.g., EER or polar modulation) has been proposed [1] as a way of improving the sy...
